People seeking their own kind

Tesanj is a city in Bosnia. The 2013 population was 43,016.

The first mention of Tesanj was in 1461.

“Between the second half of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century, the history of Tešanj was rather chaotic. Since Bosnia was considered a buffer state by the Ottomans, it changed rulers quite often, alternating between Ottoman and Hungarian occupation.

“From 1512 (or 1520-21) on, Tešanj was under continuous rule of the Ottoman Empire.”

Wikipedia does not say when Ottoman rule ended, leaving the assumption the Turks controlled the area until today.

Demographics of Tesanj present an interesting picture. In 1961, Bosniaks were the majority, at 62.6 percent. Then came Croats, 21.7 percent, and Serbs, 11.9 percent.

In the 2013 count, Bosniaks remained the majority, but a much larger majority, 93.95 percent. The number of Croats fell to 3.39 percent, and Serbs to 0.52 percent.

Things change in the Balkans, but seldom for the betterment of all peoples.
