Welcome to the uniformed corporation

Searching for blog ideas on “why sergeants are always right,” I came across this from 2019:

“The Air Force has implemented a new hiring process for new first sergeants with the Fall 2019 first sergeant assignment cycle.”

Do what? A first sergeant assignment is now a hiring process?

  1. Always was in the USAF, I think. First Sgt isn’t a rank, but a position and has to be applied for. It can be held by anyone ranked MSgt thru CMSgt. (E-7 thru E-9). The slot is denoted by a diamond device worn on the rank chevron between the upper & lower stripes.

  2. In the Army, when a first sergeant slot came open, E7s and E8s could let the selection authority, usually a battalion sergeant major, know he was interested in the position. But at no time was it referred to as a "hiring process." The sergeant major convened a selection board, usually of serving first sergeants, to interview the candidates and recommend one or none for the position.
