Free (money to the) press

From Weasel Zippers

“On September 13, Democrats on the House of Representatives’ Ways and Means Committee — which plays a key role in drafting tax policy — introduced a proposal to raise $2.9 trillion in new federal revenue over the course of ten years. The proposal centers upon drawing more funds from wealthy Americans by raising the corporate tax, the capital gains tax, the estate tax, and the income tax.

“However, the proposal also includes a ‘Payroll Credit for Compensation of Local News Journalists.’ As summarized by Editor and Publisher — a journalism industry publication — the tax credit ‘will provide local newsrooms the opportunity to receive a five-year tax credit of up to $25,000 per journalist in the first year and up to $15,000 in the subsequent four years.’”

Are Dems taking a page from the (now-defunct) ACORN, which before being forced into defunctness pending investigations, bragged about funding (paying for) several reporter positions in Arkansas newspapers?

  1. Anything that is supposed to happen or guaranteed to happen over a ten year period is total BS.
And we already know the media are on the payroll, how else could they stay in business.

  2. Forty-something years ago when I worked with a medium-sized metropolitan newspaper in Texas, another city desk editor said, "I wonder how much the Russians would pay for somebody at a newspaper to write favorable stories?" I immediately replied, "Why should they pay anybody? They're already getting it for free." He was not pleased with my answer. The federal government needs a sunset law.
