Bella Twin’s 1953 World Record Grizzly

One shot from her Cooey Ace 1 single shot .22 killed the grizzly,  but she “went to the bear and fired the rest of the .22 long cartridges that she had, loading the single shot rifle repeatedly, to ‘pay the insurance’ as Peter Hathaway Capstick said. She made sure the bear was dead, and not just stunned.”

The Cooey Ace 1 is not only a single-shot bolt action rifle, but the shooter must manually cock the rifle before firing.

The first .22 I fired was of the same configuration. Slow, but it lets you know you have to take your time. If you intend on doing a lot of fast shooting, take another rifle.

  1. My father gave me his Cooey .22 when I turned 10.

  2. I had read her exploit a few years ago, but the story then did not mention the brand of her rifle. When my wife's uncle died a few years ago, she and I took his guns from his cabin near DeQueen, Arkansas. Among them were several found in just about every farm stead in the 20th century -- a double barrel 16 gauge, a single shot .410, a Winchester ,22 short semi-auto and a bolt-action long rifle single shot .22. The rifles shoot straight.
