Returning patriotism to the left

Is that possible? You have the Democratic Party of Pima County Arizona announcing its support for a “Fuck the 4th” gathering in Tucson. The Party later removed the tweet, claiming the poster used was from the Tucson Women’s March of Monday. Oh. Somebody else made the poster, and the Party just borrowed it, so the Party is not responsible for inclusion on the Party’s tweet site. Got it. Lack of responsibility in that way is the same as when somebody “apologizes” with, “I am sorry if what I said offends you.”

Stuart Schneiderman mentions proposed Democratic reclaiming patriotism at his site, Had Enough Therapy?

“A law professor by name of Jedediah Britton-Purdy has penned a New York Times article about our patriotism gap. You see, Republicans are vastly more patriotic than Democrats. They are far more likely to love their country or to feel pride in their country. In truth, they are even more loyal to their nation.

“…Purdy wants to reclaim patriotism for the left. He does not quite know what patriotism is, so this makes his task more daunting. But he is a law professor, so he must be thoroughly adept at spinning webs of high-toned fabulations.”

Schneiderman’s remarks are worth reading, but getting past Purdy’s diatribe is not good for one’s blood pressure. Purdy would not recognize himself as Pogo’s “We have seen the enemy and it is us.”
