Maori point of honor shown to German army

On 20 May 1941, B Company, 28th (Maori) Battalion, was sent as reinforcement to near the airfield on Crete, which the Germans invaded by parachute and glider infantry. Movement necessitated a foot march of eight miles.

“During the march they came in contact with a platoon-sized force of Germans which briefly held up the company before reinforcements could arrive. The German force surrendered, but in doing so one of their number threw a grenade at the New Zealanders, wounding two men. In response the Māori fixed bayonets and carried out the first bayonet charge by a New Zealand force during the war, killing 24.

  1. Surrendering should be an honorable action. Don't F it up.

  2. Raising hands is taking a big chance. And then to have somebody decide to toss a grenade ... Open the door and somebody will come in.
