War or a battle or a firefight -- Whatever you want to call it

“When Doc Nall was there with me, working on Russell, fear, real fear, hit me.  Fear like I had never known before.  Fear comes, and once you recognize it and accept it, it passes just as fast as it comes, and you don't really think about it anymore. You just do what you have to do, but you learn the real meaning of fear and life and death.  For the next two hours I was alone on that gun, shooting at the enemy.” [i] – Pfc Bill Beck, M-60 machine gunner at LZ X-Ray, 14 November 1965.
