People do realize ‘Jaws’ was a novel and then a movie, right?

‘Spielberg Regrets “Decimation” of Sharks After Jaws’

Decimation: the killing of one in every ten of a group of people as a punishment for the whole group. Okay, the word has undergone a change, mostly in the 20th century by people who did not or do not know the original and logical definition. The root “deci” has to do with 10. So, decimation means 10 percent, or one in every 10. Line people up, kill every 10th one. “Decimation” is misused as often as “execution-style,” “notoriety” and “infamous.”

Spielberg is not blaming himself for the deaths of 10 percent of the world’s sharks just because people were entertained and maybe drew the wrong conclusions about Great White sharks. We should hope not, anyway.

If Spielberg truly feels sorry about things, he might shoot for renaming the movies’ protagonists. Isn’t the world ready for a more inclusive shark? Why a “Great White?” Maybe a “Lesser White” or a “Not So Dangerous White.”
