One of those times you can say, ‘You’re not from around here, are you’

Watching King of the Hill last night, and Peggy Hill pronounced the East Texas Indian tribe as “cay-do,” like “Playdo.” An archaeologist character had his own pronunciation – “khah-do.”

Something as big as Texas, and with Spanish, French, English, German, Mexican, American Indian influences, outsiders are bound to get stuff wrong. In one episode, Hank Hill, after meeting then-Gov. George W. Bush, was chagrined in his fictitious discover: “George Bush has a limp handshake.” Well, I can say for a fact, “No, he does not.”
